There were smiles on both sides at the end of Borussia Dortmund's 0-0 draw with Manchester City in Germany.

The Bundesliga side got the point they needed to qualify for the knockout stages while Pep Guardiola's men guaranteed their spot among the top seeds.

However, it was a clash that won't live long in the memory, and proved a frustrating evening for Erling Haaland.

The Blues were made to work hard for their 2-1 victory but their superior quality was evident in the terrific goals they scored.

Chelsea are through to the knockout stage of the Champions League, and in fine fashion.

The Blues were made to work hard for their decisive 2-1 win over Red Bull Salzburg but, in the end, their quality shone through, with Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz both scoring stunners.

After an inauspicious start, Chelsea seized control of the game, taking the lead when Kovacic instinctively swept a loose ball into the top corner from the edge of the box midway through the first half.

Ghana's ruling party lawmakers on Tuesday called for the sacking of the country's finance minister, adding pressure on the government to deal with record inflation.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has come under fire as Ghanaians face 37 percent inflation and the collapse of their currency - the cedi - in an economic hardship worsened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has just returned from Washington, where he was in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to secure a loan of $3 billion.

In addition to Mr. Ofori-Atta, a majority of parliamentarians from Mr. Akufo-Addo's New Patriotic Party (NPP) have called for the dismissal of another finance official.

Dar es Salaam. It has been eight months since the war in Ukraine broke out in February, and still there is no end in sight of a conflict that has polarised global opinion.

But even with mounting casualties on both sides, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba says his country will prevail at the end of the day, dismissing claims that they were not selling grain to Africa, terming it Russian misinformation.

“Since the opening of the grain corridor on August 1, we have shipped 7.7 million tons of grain and other Agricultural products such as sunflower oil, two thirds of this to Africa and the Middle East,” said Mr Kuleba.

The visit will be part of efforts to foster relations in line with the aspirations of the leaders of the two East African Community (EAC) member states.

The one-week mission, which is slated to start on November 7, will be a follow-up to President Félix Tshisekedi’s two-day official visit to Tanzania. Mr Tshisekedi left the country yesterday after meeting with President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on defence and security; infrastructure and transport; trade and investment, as well as social cooperation.

In their joint press briefing on Sunday, they deliberated on a number of grand infrastructure projects such as the standard gauge railway (SGR) and road construction as a way of improving connectivity, which is key to boosting trade between Tanzania and the DRC, the only two EAC members that also belong to the 16-member Southern African Development Community (Sadc).

Journey into the Congo Basin – The Lungs of Africa and Beating Heart of the World - Travel - Africaland

Journey into the Congo Basin – The Lungs of Africa and Beating Heart of the World - Travel - Africaland

Known as the “lungs of Africa”, the Congo Basin is the largest carbon sink in the world, absorbing more carbon than the Amazon. Spanning across six countries, its rainforest provides food security and an essential lifeline for indigenous and local populations and serves as a critical habitat for endangered species. Preserving the Congo Basin forests is vital not just for the future of Africa, but for that of the world. Global efforts to tackle the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss will depend on preserving this rich and lush ecosystem. Gabon annually absorbs carbon emissions equivalent to a third of France’s annual total. The Republic of Congo alone absorbs 1.5% of the world’s entire annual carbon emissions.

However, the area is increasingly coming under threat due to deforestation, environmental degradation, growing populations, and the impact of climate change. Approximately 575,000 Congolese live in forest areas and rely on the fragile ecosystem for their livelihoods, straining biodiversity protections. In Cameroon, food security, land degradation, and droughts are exacerbating conflicts over dwindling natural resources.

Climate actions are needed to help countries in the Congo Basin to pursue green, resilient, and inclusive development that allow them to conserve their natural resources while sustaining livelihoods and boosting economic diversification.

Seychelles opposition leader Ramkalawan wins presidency in landmark victory - Politics - Africaland

The Seychelles presidential election has seen an upset, with the electoral commission on Sunday declaring longtime opposition contender Wavel Ramkalawan the winner over incumbent Danny Faure. The ruling party has been knocked from power for the first time since 1977.

Opposition leader Ramkalawan, a 59-year-old priest who has largely devoted himself to politics, received 54% of the vote in the Indian Ocean island nation while Faure received 43%, the commission chair Danny Lucas said, calling the race “hotly contested."

“Mr. Faure and I are very good friends and an election does not mean the end of one’s contribution to one’s motherland,” Ramkalawan, a six-time presidential candidate, said shortly after the announcement. He promised a consultative approach and “no interference by the executive” in the work of the country's various institutions.

Faure accepted his loss and added “I wish you all the best,” the Seychelles News Agency reported. The outgoing president promised to continue living in the country and said he would be available to dispense advice.

Djibouti said seven of its soldiers were killed in an attack by a rebel group on a military barracks in the early hours of Friday, and launched a search to find six still missing.

A defense ministry statement blamed the assault on the base in Garabtisan in the north of the tiny Horn of Africa nation on the “Armed FRUD” (Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy), describing it as a “terrorist group.”

It was a rare attack in Djibouti, a largely stable and strategically important country in the Horn of Africa.

“Despite the fact that our soldiers defended themselves valiantly, this attack caused the death of seven of our soldiers, wounded four and left six missing,” it said in a statement on Friday.

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed why the picture of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Abubakar Atiku, was removed from the State’s campaign poster.

Governor Wike disclosed this during the inauguration of Rivers State PDP campaign council on Monday, alleging that Atiku chose those he wanted to work with in Rivers State without consulting him.

“The presidential candidate entered my state and picked members of the presidential council without the contribution of the governor. They said they don’t need me to campaign for them.

“I have never seen how people would disrespect a state like Rivers State and go and choose enemies of the state without”, he said.

Wike also claimed he will only campaign for people who have asked him to do so and that Atiku has not asked him to campaign for him.
